Our History

Our History

History/Timeline:

  • Real estate developer Harry Dreisen purchases a section of George Washington's estate in 1952, and dedicates approximately 100 acres to building a golf course and clubhouse. Little earth was moved in the development of the golf course. The course layout kept many of the dips, slopes and bends from Washington's original land, many of which remain to this day.
  • Mount Vernon Country Club's nine-hole golf course opens June 10, 1961. Sam Snead, Club Pro Dick Mason, and local Virginia pros Bobby Bowers and Al Jamison play opening round (the scorecard and photos from this round can be found in the hallway to Sam's Place (link to photo of scorecard).
  • Club becomes Woodlawn Country Club in 1963.
  • Course expanded to 18 holes in summer of 1969.
  • Northern Virginia Retired Men's Golf Association ("Happy Hustlers") is started by Woodlawn Country Club and International Country Club in 1972.
  • In 1992, the pool is relocated from behind the driving range to the current location off the 9th fairway.
  • New clubhouse is completed and club is renamed Mount Vernon Country Club in 1993.
  • The entire golf course is renovated in the mid-90s, including new tee boxes, bunkers and six new greens, updating the golf course for the 21st century.
  • Clubhouse is renovated in 2004 to include expanded outside patio area and new upstairs dining room, "Sam's Place."
