The course winds its way through the original forest of George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation and is enhanced by the presence of Dogue Creek, a Potomac/Chesapeake tidal tributary which lends a water hazard challenge on 14 of Mount Vernon's 18 holes.

Extensive course renovations were completed in the late 1990s, including the conversion to bentgrass fairways, expanded irrigation, rebuilt tee complexes and bunkers, and six new greens under the direction of the prestigious course design firm of Ault, Clark & Associates, LTD.

Continuing course improvements include stream bank erosion control, expansion and aesthetic enhancement of ponds and creeks, and further course beautification including a phased conversion of Mount Vernon's most outstanding course design characteristic, its mature tree population, with varieties and sizes that will maintain the challenge that makes the course unique in Northern Virginia. This second phase is under the design guidance of noted architect, Bill Love, GCAA, and his firm, Love Associates.

Mount Vernon Country Club is proud to be a Ceritfied Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
